River Opening
The river opening ceremonies at Thornhill and Dumfries were delayed by one day because the official opening date - the 25th February - fell on the Sunday.

The weather was cold but clear and good numbers attended each and joined in the traditional toast "to the River" and "to the Fish" - led by Provost Kenny Cameron (left) and Ronald Weir (right).

Wallace Hall Academy Hatchery project

Thornhill's Wallace Hall Academy's Salmon Hatchert project for S2 pupils is going well and we are told the hatched fry are coming on nicely - ready for release into the river in April.

Picture left shows one pupil stripping eggs from a hen fish under the watchful eye of River Bailliff Duncan Thomson.

The other "salmon in the Classroom" projects at Sanquhar Academy and Moniiaive Primary School are "coming along nicely" according to Head Bailiff Barry Young.

The Wallace Hall Project has been sponsored by the Thornhill's Buccleuch & Queensberry Hotel.

Gyrodactylus Salaris
If you have been fishing abroad in rivers in the European countries listed above, you can help prevent importing the disease on equipment such as keep nets, reels, boats and canoes plus associated items like wetsuits, clothing and footwear, by doing two simple things:

You MUST DRY all your equipment for at least 48 hours. (Drying in sunlight in temperatures above 20C) or

You MUST Disinfect all your equipment by immersing it in seawater or a salt solution (sodium chloride concentration 3% or more) for a minimum of ten minutes to kill the parasite. All equipment should then be thoroughly rinsed in tap water.
