River Nith Catchment Management Plan Launched

The long-awaited Nith River Catchment Management Plan has been printed and officially launched.

The document which results from the European Water Framework Directive makes very interesting reading for anyone with an interest in the river and the local environment. It attempts to analyse all the elements which have an impact on the environment of the river and its entire catchment, including the watercourses, farmland, woodland, hill country, lochs and bog areas and will act as a benchmark for water and environmental.

It examines all aspects of plant and animal life - to determine where some form of protection or preservation is needed to guarantee sustainability.

Wallace Hall Academy Hatchery project

Thornhill's Wallace Hall Academy's Salmon Hatchert project for S2 pupils went well over the winter months. The resultant fry were released into the river today. The'ceremony' formed part of the launch of the Nith Catchment Management Plan.

Picture left shows two pupil gently putting the young salmon fry - the fruits of their classroom work - into the river at the Nith Bridge

The other "salmon in the Classroom" projects at Sanquhar Academy and Moniaive Primary School were also highly successful and those fry have also been released.

The Wallace Hall Project was sponsored by the Thornhill's Buccleuch & Queensberry Hotel.
