"Great bunch of kids"

The juniors worked under the supervision of instructors from the Carlisle-based “Borderlines” helped by local angling enthusiasts.

Instructor Clive Mitchellhill said afterwards “we were quite taken by the level of interest by all the participants. Individual casting skills improved considerably, but we also improved awareness of safety while fishing and on caring for the Environment.

More than anything else, we were impressed by their enthusiasm and willingness to learn. You have a great bunch of kids there”.

Thanks to all our main sponsors for the courses who were :-

ATH Opencast Mining - New Cumnock
Dumfries Common Good Fishings
Dumfries & Galloway Angling Association
Mid-Nithsdale Angling Association

Junior courses a major success again this year

The NFIA Junior training days went off really well again this year - with a total of 56 youngsters involved during the 4 days. The courses were again held at the Drum Loch Fishery at Auldgirth and instruction was done by the Carlisle-based "Borderlines" instruction group (formerly "The Compete Angling Experience") and Ed Baxter.

The courses were part of a programme organised by the NFIA. Chairperson, Mike Keggans commented “We saw a need to bring more kids into what is increasingly being viewed as ‘an old man’s sport’.

"Local Angling clubs, beat owners and some of our individual members have again responded brilliantly to our sponsorship appeal and we brought in enough donations for us to offer the courses completely free of charge to the kids. We have also to thank the Drum Fishery for providing an excellent venue for the coaching and D&G Council’s Leisure Services for laying on free transport from Dumfries on each day.”

Stick to the sea trout limit . . . or else

The local District Salmon Board has recommended a catch limit of two sea trout/angler/day and also that fish of over 3lb are returned to the river.

Sporting anglers are sticking to the recommendation - but if others persist in ignoring it, word has it that the "recommendation" will become an "order".

All anglers are asked to cooperate with this conservation measure.

Gyrodactylus Salaris
Anglers are still being urged to keep a watch out for GS and to follow all precautions to stop its introduction to the Nith. See Nith News Issue 13 for details.

Signal Crayfish
River Manager Jim Henderson has also called for an active watch for signs of American Signal Crayfish which has already colonised the nearby rivers Clyde and Dee. See the NFIA Annual Report for more information.
