2005 Season opens with a flourish

Despite the cold, angling enthusiasts were out on the river on opening day on 25th February.

The Mid-Nithsdale Angling Association members (top picture) gathered at the Nith Bridge to welcome in the new season in traditional style.

Also on the opening morning Dumfries Burgh Anglers gathered (bottom picture) to toast the opening of the new season on the town's "Wee Green".

There were no reports of fresh fish being taken - although some well-mended kelts were landed and returned to the river.

Dumfries Provost Kenny Cameron (right) waits for Piper Billy Geddes to finish before offering a toast to "The Fish" and pouring the sacrificial bottle of whisky into the river . . . .

River Management Plan
The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) recently arranged a couple of informal public workshops to hear local views on draft proposals for the future management of the waters of the River Nith catchment. The proposals come as part of the process of implementing the European Water Framework Directive 2000.

SEPA has circulated the draft plan. Copies can be had from Jackie Galley at the SEPA Dumfries Office (Tel. 01387 720502).

The local meetings were on Monday 7th March (2.00 to 3.30pm or 6.00- 7.30pm) in the Cairndale Hotel, Dumfries and on Thursday 10th March in the Thornhill Inn (formally The George Hotel), Thornhill. (2.00 to 3.30pm or 6.00 to 7.30 pm).

You can still send comments on the plan to SEPA on 01387 720502 or email d&gcatchmentplan@sepa.org.uk.
