The
Drum Fishery has sponsored the courses by giving
the fishing free for the both days. Dumfries &
Galloway Council’s Leisure & Sport Department
also helped by providing transport to and from the
Loch. Valuable help has also been given by Nith
District Salmon Board staff.
The
courses are free. Most of the expense of the course
was provided from NFIA funds, but the Old Mains
Fishery and the District Salmon Board also provided
financial sponsorship.

First
Junior Course
a huge success
It
was just the start of the holidays, but one group of
local youngsters were more than happy to go back to
school on Wednesday 6th July. They were all aiming to
develop their fly fishing skills at the Drum Fishery,
Dalswinton, under the guidance of professional Instructors
from the Carlisle-based “Complete Angling Experience”
and local anglers David Tait and Ed Baxter.
Concentration was high as they worked hard
throughout the day. Instructor Clive Mitchellhill said
afterwards “we try to concentrate on improving
casting but the course also raises awareness of safety
while fishing and on caring for the Environment. We
were really impressed by their enthusiasm and willingness
to learn. Conditions were a wee bit windy, but thet
all stuck to the task. They had all improved skill levels
at the end of the afternoon.” As a bonus,
10 trout were landed during the day.
The course was organised by the Nith Fishings Improvements
Association as part of its drive to encourage more young
people into the sport. NFIA Chairperson, Tom Florey
commented “We are conscious that fewer youngsters
are taking up angling in recent years, so we decided
to promote a couple of courses during the holiday period.
They are aimed at anglers aged between 10 and 17. No
previous experience is needed and the courses are free.”
There are still a few places left for the second course
on Tuesday 9th August. If you are interested, contact
