Concern over low river level

Local anglers are expressing extreme concern over the continuing low level of the river and its tributaries following the summer's sustained period with little or no rainfall.

Much of the river has been reduced to a mere trickle. Normally this would have a good flow on it at this stage of the year and anglers could be expecting to be fly fishing from the opposite bank.

NFIA Chairperson, Tom Florey said "We are all praying for rain in the very near future.   In 2004, we had good levels right throughout the summer and this resulted in pretty near record catches as the early fish were able to run the river without difficulty.  Reports are that these summer fish are hanging about in the estuary, waiting for rain to arrive. If we don't get it soon, then we could have problems with the late-running autumn fish".

We've got a rather unusual visitor at the Dumfries Caul at the moment. Keen-eyed tourists have been amused by the sight of a baby seal which swims about in the pools above and below the Caul.

Local wildlife experts reckon it has become seperated from its mother before being carried up the river on the tide.

Photo on the right shows it having a quiet snooze on the Caul - oblivious to the presence of the young black backed gull.
