2006 Season opens with renewed hope . . .

The 2006 season opened with renewed hopes for a better season than last year. At opening ceremonies in Thornhill and Dumfries, speakers voiced hopes that 2005 was a mere "blip" in the continuing upwards trend for the Nith in recent years.

The problem last year was that we had little or no water during the early summer and autumn months. There was no lack of fish at the end of the season, but they certainly made themselves difficult to catch.

Mid-Nithsdale AA President, Ronald Weir raises his glass to convey best wishes for a successful season - before pouring in a wee dram into the river for the salmon.

David Dillon (top) and Andy Stewart carefully return kelts to the river on the Dumfries Town Water. These were just a couple of the 30 or so which were landed in the Town Waters.

Dumfries Provost Kenny Cameron pours the celebratory bottle of whisky (honest) into the river at Dumfries to mark the opening of the 2006 season - ably assisted by the Burgh Anglers President Alex Saville and Secretary Andy Stewart.

Marine Biologists tell us it doesn't do the fish any harm . . . !

The opening day had everything except a spring fish on the bank. With the good weather and the low water in recent weeks, it was inevitable that there would be plenty of kelts splashing about.

We had reports from most of the bottom beats of small well-mended fish being landed.

Isobel McMillan
It is with great sadness that we have to report the death of Mrs Isobel McMillan. Isobel was a great friend to Nith anglers - locals and visitors - over many years. She had been unwell for the last two or three years. Our thoughts are with husband Willie and daughter Susan.

It is also worth mentioning that Susan has also been unwell for a couple of months. Friends will be pleased to note that she is now on the road to recovery.

Important Ticket Changes
There have been a couple of important ticket changes for the start of 2006 . . .
Dumfries & Galloway AA tickets for the Carnsalloch and Cairn Fishings will now be issued by Patties of Dumfries (see the beat page). Unfortunately, due to family circumstances, McMillans Tackle Shop has had to relinquish the duties after an association with the club of over 80 years.
Barjarg Estate tickets are now being issued by Dougie Smith of Brandyburn Farm (again see the beat page). Dougie also issues tickets for Dalswinton Estate.

News from the Nith Hatchery is that they have a great winter and should be releasing a record amount of fry (salmon and sea trout) into the river in April. Head Bailliff Barry Young tells us the team should be putting in over 750,000 feeding fry. We've also received a batch of about 10,000 6" to 8" brown trout which will be released into the top beats on 1st March. Sea Trout started running
There have been welcome (reliable) reports of numbers of good fresh sea trout running through some of the lower beats. With any luck this will continue and make up in some way for the lack of sea trout in 2005.
