A delighted Kevin Celentano with his first-ever salmon, taken in Autumn 2004.

The Old Mains beat has only recently been developed. It has approximately 2 miles of single-bank fishing, located on the right bank between the Ryehill fishery and the Upper-Nithsdale Angling Association waters. There are 7 named pools and 6 runs over the stretch.

RULES

  • The beat caters for all type of fishing, dependant on water levels.
  • There are no restrictions on the use of legally accepted baits. (note that prawns and shrimps are banned on the Nith system)
  • For general practice, we support the NITH ANGLING CODE (see page on the website)

Ghillie services are available (rates by mutual agreement)

There is ample parking, together with packed-lunch facilities and accommodation in a self-contained timber cabin.

The 2004 catch was 32 salmon, 8 grilse and 32 sea trout - although the beat was fished by only a small group of anglers, with mainly a 'catch & release' policy. Salmon varied in size from 8lb to 20lb - Grilse from 4lb to 8lb - and sea trout up to 10lb.

Three anglers from Yorkshire (pictured left)fished the Old Mains beat on Monday where three fish of 12, 10 & 6lb respectively were landed. All were caught on Fly.

The three - Jim Soboleski, Vance Mears and Graham Waugh are pictured with fellow visitor Gordon Hunter who also took a nice fish.

"The best days fishing we have had in many a year" was their comment over the compulsory celebratory dram.
