The Caerlaverock Reserve is home to a wide
range of bird life, particularly from September through
to April when it is visited by large numbers of wintering
geese and waders. The number of Barnacle Geese that fly
from Norway to the banks of the Solway Firth each year
are a sign of the quality of the wetlands at Caerlaverlock.
This is simply a must for any lover of birds and their
wild habitats. On-site accommodation is also available. |

Wanlockhead
Lead Mining Museum
The
Museum is unique in Scotland as it is the only former
lead mine open to the public. The Visitor Centre is
in the heart of Wanlockhead, which is Scotland's highest
Village at 1531 ft./468.08 m. above sea level.
It was once the Village Smiddy. Robert Burns had his
horse shod here when it threw a shoe whilst he was on
a visit to the area in his capacity as Exciseman.
The Centre holds a walk-through exhibition which tells
how lead ore or galena was mined and the processes it
went through to become the lead products that we know
today. You can see the different equipment and
pumps used by the miners to win the ore and keep the
water levels down. |

most prolific pike water with the emphasis on large catches
of hard fighting middleweight fish. Historically some
huge pike have been recorded here, including the famous
