The Nith Fishings Improvements Association

Our Association was formed in 1934, when it was recognised that the stock of migratory fish had been depleted almost to the point of extinction due to pollution from the spinning mills on the lower stretches and the mining developments in the upper valley.

The newly-formed Association drew together everyone with an interest in angling on the river to promote a programme of activity to "bring the river back to life", which included . . .

Setting up a restocking programme through a local hatchery, using eggs obtained from locally-caught fish

Actively combatting pollution in association with the local industries and Authorities

Removing obstructions such as redundant factory weirs and dams to allow ease of passage for migratory fish to reach the spawning head-streams
The programme has had amazing success over the last 60 years. Through it, the Nith has recovered to become one of Scotland's foremost salmon and sea trout rivers.
Much of the earlier work and responsibilities has been taken over by the Nith District Salmon Fisheries Board (see the NDSFB page).

The Association works closely with the Salmon Board and its Officers in support of the Hatchery programme and the Habitat Improvements Scheme. It has a continuing valuable role to play by:

Coordinating the interests of the various riparian owners and angling bodies

Acting as a forum for discussion on common issues and as a pressure group where action is needed to protect common aims.

Combatting poaching and other bad practices throughout the river system

Encouraging Young Angler training and involvement

Publicising and promoting the Nith to encourge visiting anglers

Picture shows the Caul which once served as a dam for the local grain mill. The dam now has a fish pass to allow the fish to enter the river. The river is tidal up to this point.
