2009 Opening Day Ceremonies to "toast the fish"

In contrast to last year, when we had heavy rain in the run-up to the opening day, for the start of the 2009 season the river was COLD, CLEAR and LOW!

Addressing anglers at the opening ceremony on Dumfries’s Wee Green, Provost Jack Groom expressed his wish that 2009 will be a good year - to match 2008 when the catch on the Town Water was the highest in recent years. He praised the Burgh Anglers Association for its continued efforts to improve conditions on the river.

Jack also praised the NDSFB staff for their restocking work and hoped that in this the “Year of the Homecoming” more and more of the newly released juvenile salmon would eventually return to the river of their birth.

Mid-Nithsdale AA President Ronald Weir again led the opening ceremony at Thornhill. He also wished the gathered anglers success in the new
season with hopes for plenty of fish, good river levels (but not too much) - and the much needed helping of good luck thrown in for good measure.

Both ceremonies finished off with the traditional raising of the glass to "Toast the Fish" and to wish all anglers agood season in 2009.
